ToggleYou chose the date for taking your PMP exam in a moment of enthusiasm. But then your colleague told you that the exam changed and that your preparation materials may not fully reflect the updated outline.
Relax! PMI has maintained the three exam domains. But the outline has been updated, and so must be your 60-day preparation plan.
What Changed in the PMP Exam?
The exam was updated in July 2026. While the three domains of the PMP exam have remained unchanged, their weightings have shifted.
- People: 33% (previously 42%)
- Process: 41% (previously 50%)
- Business Environment: 26% (previously 8%)
Adaptive/agile and hybrid approaches together form around 60% of the questions on the exam. The remaining 40% of questions cover predictive approaches.
The exam consists of 180 questions in various formats, including single- and multiple-response questions, drag-and-drop questions, case or scenario questions, graphic-based questions, and practicum-style questions. You have 240 minutes to complete the examination. There are two optional 10-minute breaks as well: the first after the case-study section, the second after about half of the independent-question section.
Out of 180 questions, 170 count. The other 10 questions are pretest questions and do not count toward your total score.
The new exam will also include case- or scenario-based questions and graphics-based questions. It also includes newer professional practice themes such as AI and sustainability.
Is 60 Days Really Enough?
Sure, you can work it in that period if you follow a consistent study schedule. Be ready to devote 1.5 to 2 hours to studying on weekdays and additional time on weekends.
How to Break Down the 60 Days?
Day 1-10: Get a free PMI Exam Content Outline. Take a diagnostic test to identify your weakest area of knowledge.
Days 11-35: Work on one subject at a time. Put adaptive/agile, hybrid, and predictive topics into one subject area.
Days 36 to 50: Complete 40 to 50 practice test questions per day.
Days 51 to 58: Complete two full 240-minute mock exams at the same time of day you plan to sit for the actual exam.
Days 59 and 60: Rest and review your mistakes.
What Course of Study Comes First?
Start with the domain in which you score lowest on your diagnostic test. If you do not have a clear weak area, begin with Process because it accounts for 41% of the exam. Then study People and Business Environment.
For Business Environment, begin with key principles of compliance, governance, and organizational change. Then study the role of projects in relation to business strategy.
Whenever a particular example does not seem clear to you, think about the result an organization is trying to achieve.
How Do You Practice Wisely?
Create a record of your mistakes. Record the area and the reason behind each miss. Certain patterns soon emerge. For example, you might be hasty with People-type questions or you might confuse adaptive/agile terminology.
Practice the new formats right from the beginning. Read the case study carefully, then answer all related questions using the information provided. For graphic-based questions, become familiar with interpreting charts, graphs, and other visual information, including burndown charts and risk matrices.
Since you do not know which questions are pretests, treat each question as scored.

Can an employed person prepare for the exam in two months?
Yes, as long as the preparation is carried out consistently throughout the study period.
How much of the exam uses agile approaches?
Approximately 60% of questions are divided between adaptive/agile and hybrid approaches. The remaining 40% cover predictive approaches.
How many questions are taken into account when calculating the result of the exam?
Out of 180 questions, 170 are used to calculate the result. The other 10 questions do not impact the score.
